NEWS : My own velvet trend collection!
Tadaa! Finally I can share the big news with all of you! I designed my own velvet trend collection for the Egyptian brand Inca & Co.
Velvet trend collection
About one year ago the Egyptian brand Inca and Co asked me if I want to design my own collection for them. They wanted to collaborate with different designers and I am one of them. A bit overwhelmed by the question I said ofcourse Yes! Wow, what a new challenge! I took my time to think about the concept and what collection I want to create. Designing my own fabrics is not what I do everyday and you have to think about different things at the same time. What will the concept be? Somehow I wanted it to be connected, one story.
Design
But also when I started desigining the follow questions popped up in my head. Which colours shall I use? How big can the print be? Will it look good at the end? After brainstorming and making moodboard I suddenly came up with the idea. I wanted to create a collection inspired by the travels I made in Egypt because I did that a lot.
And in addition the collections of Inca and Co are mostly inspired by travelling, other cultures and story telling. Seems like a good way to tell my own story with this velvet trend collection.
Story telling with fabrics
As you might know I love photography and creating memories. In this collection my 3 passion comes together : travelling, photography and my love for Egypt. I have visited different places here in Egypt, think about Old Cairo, Fayoum, Luxor and Aswan. All of these places where a source of inspiration for me while creating this collection. Below I share with you my moodboards for the velvet trend collection. As you can see the designs are inspired by real photo’s I have made of different beautiful places I have visited. Seeing these travel memories turning into a real product makes me so proud. Can you pinch me?
Art of the Desert – Fayoum
Fayoum is a place in the middle of the desert, driving 1,5hour from Cairo. This place is wellknown by the art of pottery and handmade paintings. Especially the place ‘Tunis Village’. While walking around and you can have a peek in the people’s homes and workshops. Here they create the most beautiful pots, bowls, artwork and more, all by hand. Inspired by all the colours, especially in the buildings I walked into this pretty peach wall. On this wall I saw the most amazing tiles. The inspiration for my textile design : Art of the Desert.

Nubian spices
Travelling to the south of Egypt was one of the most beautiful travels I have made here in Egypt. Having the feeling you go back in time and explore the amazing history of this country. Inspired by the temples and stories from the past we visited the Nubian Village in Aswan. A pretty colourful village where you get inspired by handcrafts, welcoming smiles ( we were even invited into their homes) and above all delicious food. Herbs are displayed in big bowls on the street. That was my inspiration for this textile design : Nubian spices.

Walls of History
Talking about history, I believe it’s everywhere in Egypt. Wandering around Old Cairo is the best weekend activity, especially on friday morning before the city awakes. Walking around in the empty streets looking for those pretty details about history. In Moez street I found this beautiful wall with mother pearl. Imperfection turns into perfection here. As you can see it’s handmade and that’s where the beauty comes from. Those details from the past is something we can learn from these days. In this wall I found my inspiration for the textile design : Walls of History.

Engraved stories
Creating memories from travels is for me all about story telling. Even during travels nearby home I can get so inspired. I love to know more about a culture yet about the past. Seems like sometimes I even want to sneak around a door. Curious of who is living inside and how their house looks like. What’s the story of the people behind this beautiful door? How do they live their lives? Are they able to do what they love? We see faces, we see houses and so many stories behind these doors. A place to share with your loved ones, a place to call home. This is where I found my inspiration for textile collection : Engraved stories.
